Past Continuous + when + Past Simple

Azione in corso + interruzione

Schema: [Was/Were -ing] + when + [Past Simple]
Significato: Si usa per descrivere un'azione che era in corso quando un'altra azione l'ha interrotta.

I was sleeping when the phone rang.

Stavo dormendo quando il telefono ha squillato.

She was showering when the water stopped.

Si stava facendo la doccia quando l'acqua si è interrotta.

In inglese usiamo il Past Simple per azioni finite e concluse nel passato.

Il Past Continuous (was/were + forma -ing) si usa invece per azioni che erano in fase di svolgimento.

Spesso queste due forme si trovano nella stessa frase collegate da when (quando) o while (mentre).

I was watching TV when he arrived.
= 'Stavo guardando la TV quando lui è arrivato.'

It started to rain while we were playing.
= 'Ha iniziato a piovere mentre stavamo giocando.'

Scegli la forma corretta: 'I ______ (study) when the lights ______ (go) out.'
